What Next?
The Association of British Muslims (AOBM) is undergoing a Reorganisation prior to embarking on a Relaunch.
At the same time there are certain immediate activities that have to be embarked upon in the coming twelvemonth. Consequently, the AOBM will, insha Allah, be conducting its business through an ad hoc co-opted Executive headed by the Amir/President, advised by a consultative and advisory body (a majlisu-sh shoura). This will work towards the holding of a plenary Annual General Meeting when an elected Executive will take over.
Furthermore, the AOBM will endeavour to encourage participation in the 2010 General Election in the United Kingdom, and will advise the various political parties on matters relating to Islam and the Muslims, especially those communities residing in the UK.
It will continue to work against extremism of whatever provenance within the UK’s Muslim Communities, and against the use of ignorance and negative stereotypings to anathematise Islam and Muslims, and against Islamophobia.
The AOBM will continue to work with peoples and organisations of the other religious groups to be found within the United Kingdom and Europe, and to build relations with such bodies further afield.
The AOBM wishes to promote the establishment and maintenance of mutual contacts between British Muslims of whatever origin and their families and general wellwishers. To facilitate this a category of Associate Membership of the AOBM has been set up for people of other faiths who wish to support the work of the AOBM in a more formal way.
During this period of reorganisation, the AOBM will continue to support and work for the development of non-exclusive social welfare projects and community action groups.
